This month, I am really into Bath and Body Works autumn scents and candles. There are great sales out there coming out every week, so keep your eyes out of you are a BBW fan! I have stocked up quite a bit, and totally ready for autumn. Scent-wise, that is.
Art around town (Portland OR) - if you are a fan of Cuban music, definitely check out "Cuba Libre" musical in Portland. Don't forget to bring your dancing shoes! Also, Oregon Symphony is coming up with interesting concerts - some not classical at all, so check out if you are looking for things to do indoors even if you aren't into classical music. If you are a Jazz fan, Brad Mehldau will be in town, also Patti Smith will come to Portland to promote her new book. Speaking of books...
I have read or listened to several books in October. My favorite was "Essentialism" by Greg McKeown. I am such a sucker of minimalist ideas - coming from Japan, I am strongly attracted zen-style cleanness. You wouldn't be able to tell from my stock piling of BBW items though. The book is very easy to read and makes me feel inspired. I liked it a lot and would recommend it. It's available at Amazon.
Disclaimer: This post is unsponsored. While some products were received free of charge, I am under no obligation to review them in my empties. I might have finished items mentioned here in October, some items have taken me several months to finish up.
My opinions are proudly my own - it may differ from other people's. If you are reading this, you need to decide on your own too - take mine, or anyone else's, opinions with a grain of salt, always. You get to make a final decision as a consumer.
When I talk about candles, I have been watching a lot of YouTube review videos - and I would like to give a shout out to those who entertain and enlighten me on a daily bases. Liz and Will Love Scents, Hearth and Soul, Bad Enabler, MrKongsMom, Tinadivalicious, and ravesandrantsreviews, to name just a few. I know these reviews take time and energy, and I really appreciate you all. Thank you!!
This was from 2014 spring collection. I am not completely done with this (as this is my favorite, I am using sparingly) but I expect to finish this soon and will be talking about another apple candle, so I thought I would through this here.
Price - $12.50
Scent - description reads "McIntosh Apple, pear blossom and oak" but in reality, this is straight up fresh crisp sweet apple. Fantastic. I love simple fresh scents.
Throw - fantastic, better than most 3-wick candles.
Burn- you see some wax residue on the side here, but otherwise no soot, no drowning, no high frames. Beautiful candle.
Would I repurchase? - YES. As with many BBW products, they are very season specific and some do not return, as was this. However, this year White Barn came up with Farmstand Apple, which had the same notes in scent description. So I bought two 3-wicks. On cold, they don't smell as pungent as the smaller jar I have here, but I am hoping they smell the same when I burn them. Fingers crossed.
So.. the wick made lovely crackle sound, but this candle sooted badly. I could see black smoke coming right off the wick, and it concerned me enough to stop burning this after awhile. Also, as it is a single wick, it didn't pool correctly and had to live its entire life in a foil (sad face). So I would say pretty poor performer overall.
I was using the remaining wax in a candle warmer, then the wax came right off the tumbler. I will clean the tumbler and re-purpose it (yay!). Wax is also being used in melts, etc. Wick, as lovely noice it made, had to go. I have seen someone else talking about this candle on YouTube and she had the same issue... so I feel this wasn't just me.
Scent is "apple" and this is a sweet, sugary apple, not as crisp as Farmstand Apple from BBW I love so much. It's not bad though, and throw is about medium.
Would I repurchase? humm. No if I wasn't such a container lover. I did find two smaller tumblers in matching color, so I bought two smaller ones to match the larger candle. I felt the glass jar was worth its price I paid.
Price: $4.93 at Walmart
Notes: cedar, citrus, and green moss
Cold sniff: masculine scent
Throw: very little
I went to Walmart specifically for cheap candles I heard so much on YouTube. I bought two. Here is one of them. It burns well but scent throw is very little. If you are getting this for ambiance, I think this candle for the price is good enough. If you are getting this for scent, don't bother.
As you can see, this candle is not empty - I decided that I am not enjoying this very much, and better to be passed on to someone who might enjoy it more.
The other candle I got from Walmart is Cinnamon Apple Cider. It has a little more scent throw and I enjoy it more, but the throw, again, is on a lighter side.
Would I repurchase? Not these scents. I am willing to try other scents though. I hear they have Christmas scents!
From YouTube, I am told that performance varies wildly .... So maybe luck is also involved.
Bath and Body Works mini candle
I believe these came out early spring 2015.
Price $4.50 each
Notes: both coconut based. Oahu is especially strong.
Cold sniff: strong coconut beach scent.
Personally I am not a fan of coconut scent. I bought these purely for the containers.
As I mentioned above, I recently became obsessed with BBW candles, and bought a lot of them. Then I went to storage to store new stash, only to drop a bag of smaller candles. These two are victims of that drop. If I didn't hate coconut scent, I would have found a way to use these wax somehow out of the container... but I can't stand it. Basically a waste of beautiful containers here. Thank you for coming to my life even for a short, unfulfilled time. Amen.
Price - $1 at Dollar Tree
Scent: vanilla and cream.
Throw: medium, very good for this brand.
I have tried several candles from this brand in the past, and they were all very discouraging- no throw, puny wicks, wick not being centered, etc. So I stopped purchasing from this brand altogether, and then, well, they came out with a cute little "masen" jars. I thought I could easily repurpose it, and willing to pay for a dollar for the container, with very little expectation. Them surprise! Good throw and steady frame. It was a good candle and I enjoyed it.
Would I repurchase? YES, but I can't find this at my local store any more. They had different scents, three of which I purchased and am burning..... "Cranberry crash" smells like a jolly rancher candy on cold and when burning, there is slight throw (not as strong as sugar cookie). This doesn't bother me because I don't care for strong scents anyway so I am okay, as long as the container is cute.
-Pilot Flixion Ball slim 0.38mm. (Blue ink) Convenient eraceable ink in a roller ball pen! Loved this, has an entire set of colors. Mine is from Japan, and more popular thicker ink size is available at Amazon and Office Depot.
-Uni jetstream 0.5mm in black ink. The only pen I write with in my datebook. Smooth, precise, love this pen.
Both pens are made in Japan, one of lovely craftsmanship I am very proud of to share my heritage. I am a big fan of gelpens from Pilot and Uniball, I also like Zebra Sarasa. I Have huge mountain of back ups on all those.
Thank you for reading!!
