Russell Maliphant, who choreographed for Balletboyz as well as commercial spots for large companies (auto industry, etc) brought four amazing dancers and one (Michael Hulls) amazing amazing light designer. Please excuse my triple-cated use of "amazing." In a way, it wasn't so amazing- because I had always known there is sublimity in simplicity. It's hard to do, to carry an almost 2 hour long show with just four dancers. You have to be really, really good. And they were.
Did I say the lighting was amazing? Yes.
They play one more night on Saturday. Go see it yourself!
Night Two: Spanish Brass (Valencia, Spain) at Winningstad Hall.
So those five brass players have been playing together, most of them for over.... twenty years I suspect. and they are very humble, entertaining, and play variety of music- including Bach, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Fats Waller, and some Spanish composers I have never heard of. I loved the different texture of music, and different arrangements of old pieces I am used to listening with orchestra, and others I have discovered. I loved it, the audience loved it. I think they travel a lot, so don't miss them if they come to town!
Rain returned to PDX on the second night. Might as well stay home and order more Memebox ... (not quite sure what is wrong with me at this point, I need more cleansers and toners like a bullet in my head.)
Also, may I recommend everyone that rainy weekend might be a good time to start planning for PIFF (Portland International Film Festival) starting early February!! And yes, who cares how I look like if I am sitting in a dark movie theater for the next month, watching TONS of movies!? I must be crazy.....
and this crazy night had two nights of fun, and now ready to go to bed. Good night everyone!
