I am a casual theater goer... I love musical and dance, so these I do go see shows every chance I get (luckily this is Portland and we don't get as many shows NYC. But don't underestimate Portland either... we have a pretty extensive dance community, and we get fair amount. Portland LOVEs dances. Now fashion.... it's another story.)
Ahem. I digressed.
Third Rail Theater is coming up with their version of the Mystery of Irma Vep, written by Charles Ludlem in 1984. It's a theater in three acts (about 2 1/2 hours total including two intermissions).
It is a satire of several theatrical, literary and film genres, including Victorian melodrama, farce, the penny dreadful, Wuthering Heights and the Alfred Hitchcock film Rebecca (1940). The title is the name of a character in the 1915 French movie serial Les Vampires and is an anagram for the word, "vampire."
This is Third Rail Repertory Theatre's ninth season, second show.
Warning: There are a lot of costume changes, puns, and corny jokes. It probably is not suitable for children 16 or under. So if you don't like these things, you might hate this. BUT I LOVED it. And I am not a big fan of stupid jokes either. These two actors (Isaac Lamb and Leif Norby) have perfect timing, and works well together. Disclaimer: I also loved Rebecca (one of my favorite Hitchcock movies) and Victorian films.
I really liked this show. I also have seen other Christmas shows in Portland: Santaland Diaries and Twice Your Dickens, both at Portland Center Stage, Tuna Christmas, It's Wonderful Life by Stomptown. Really, Irma Vep is the best. (And Santaland is also very fun, and shorter if your partner is not so much into theater scene and going with you just to humor you as Christmas charity type of thing). But I think you adult theater audience would love Irma Vep, absolutely. Everyone went home smiling. Go see it.

Disclaimer: I don't know anyone from Third Rail, nor receive any compensation for writing this review, monetary or otherwise. This is an independent review consisting solely my own opinions and love of Rebecca. I enjoyed the show, and hope lots of people get to see it too, because it's delightful! Cheers!
